Despite our progress over the years, there are still those in society that have been left wanting. Today some people still do not have access to clean water. There are those who do not have a hearth or a house and some who lack access to basic human rights. All over the world we have individuals that do not have a clean and reliable source of water. We have seen the news reports of poorer nations and their struggle to survive and think it cant happen here. However, even in places like Newark, New Jersey and Flint, Michigan they still do not have access to clean water. Even in Canada some indigenous reserves need clean water. This is a basic right that each of us deserves and yet it's still not universal. This must change. Many who lack access to clean water also suffer from food insecurity. All over the world we have men, women and children dying from hunger. Many think this problem is only faced by poorer nations but food insecurity exists in the western world. We have all seen prices increase on our food bill's in recent years and this has left many food insecure. Technology and innovation has made growing and harvesting food easier which should lower costs but yet each year it gets more expensive. Many people in this nation and others across the world are one paycheck away from homelessness. No matter how people struggle and save the cost of living always increases while wages stagnate. It's getting harder and more expensive to live in our society. It used to be that a person could raise a family and retire comfortably one one income, this as we know is no longer the case. In todays world it takes at least two incomes to raise a family and even with two incomes people are still struggling to get by. Scrimping, saving and sacrificing what they can in order to give their children a better life than they were handed. Working long hours for little pay as they watch the same cycle of poverty claim their childrens potential. The industrial revolution and mass production was supposed to make everything more cost effective. However, everything seems to be getting more expensive from food to furniture despite the advances we have made. New tariffs or taxes are levied that increase costs and line the pockets of the rich. New laws are passed that make life harder for all but the rich while the poor pay the lions share in this society. This is wrong. I do not know where it went wrong but this is not the system or society that our ancestors had envisioned. We as a civilized and progressive society should be able to have all our citizens live comfortably. They should make enough not just to survive but live and should have access to basic human rights including access to food and water. Year after year we hear promise after promise of change and action while the rich and powerful line their pockets off the sweat equity of the poor. The disparity between the rich and the poor is expansive and highlights the hubris of our society. The poor are essentially economic slaves and this system is keeping them in chains. No more will we toil amid tribulation, no more will we live in economic servitude. The system that is in place was cultivated by the rich to keep them rich and everyone else poor. We lobby and march for change and they pacify us with talk of change or symbolic gestures while the system of poverty continues. With every rise in minimum wage the cost of living rises and the poor are left in the same economic servitude. We need real change, not symbolic gestures or rhetoric but change that every average person can see. We need cheaper groceries so that people can know where there next meal is coming from. We need cheaper rental conditions and home ownership options to ensure people can live. We need nationally recognized rents that take into account food and other costs to ensure rents become cheaper. We need more educational options to ensure everyone has a chance to learn and we need cheaper taxes for the poor. It's time that the rich and mega rich paid their fair share to ensure everyone has equality of opportunity. Too long we have addressed the problems caused by this system but failed to address the cause which is the system itself. It's time to lobby and litigate, peacefully march and mandate a new way of living. Its time that we eliminated poverty by changing the system that actively supports poverty. It's time to break the chains of economic servitude. Together we must revolutionize our society to ensure liberty and justice for all. Stay safe, stay sanitized and stay supportive, John Ames Birch @johneames2
