Each day men, women and children face an uncertain future on the streets. The homeless situation has been exacerbated by the pandemic and as such this system is experiencing more need than expected. Certain supplies are rarely donated or go quickly due to demand. Common supplies are sometimes scarce which only adds to a difficult situation for those homeless amongst us. I was therefore hoping that we can come together to start a donation initiative for homeless shelters across Canada as well as the Herb Jamieson Centre in Edmonton. The staff here work tirelessly to help people and deal with many dangers and situations. Given today's world they themselves might need the services and I am hopeful we can crowdsource to supplement their wages while a fiscal review is completed nationally. Furthermore, the centre is missing certain luxuries like water fountains internally and externally as well. Many times the staff need to lug water buckets to and from as well as help with large boxes of belongings. A pneumatic lift would be a benefit to this location. Furthermore, they do not have a coffee machine or proper seating during their shifts which can cause them to become tired easily. A few simple measures would improve quality of life for the staff as well as the guests. We also have more demand than supply when it comes to towels and blankets. I have also noticed many guests without proper footwear and given that its approaching winter I am concerned for their safety. There are also people who require warmer tents, blankets and washrooms for them to use. I also overheard that feminine hygiene products are rarely donated which can be a medical issue if not resolved. Finally, we are also in need of luggage and carts for carrying belongings as well as storage spaces for larger items. I realize that each of you are businesses and have many factors to consider, however, we are one people and if you can help I humbly ask for assistance as the current system is failing some. Perhaps we can reach out to the provincial and federal governments and determine if there are charity tax breaks that can be added for philanthropy during this time to allow you to donate while staying competitive. We are in this together and together we will make a better world for us and those that follow. It can be easy to fall through the cracks of our society and now more than ever we need champions to stand for all of us. I know that the people behind these logos are good and just and if you can help I again humbly ask the corporate sector to save us while building social capital. If you would be so kind as to review this matter and escalate this up the chain of command it might just save a life. #findyourhero #stophomelessness #givehope "Rights are just words without actions to defend them" John Ames Birch @johneames2
