Hey everyone,
I recently read a story that talked about Dean Cain and his interpretation of a woke Captain America. He indicated that it seemed like he was bashing America when he was pointing out inequality. He stated that it was Anti-American to criticize America as it's a great country.
I agree that America is great but it has been made great because its finally starting to open its eyes. The america of today is much different then it was.
History stands as testament to the dark days of slavery. Long ago men, women and children were sold into slavery. Hundreds of generations of atrocity ended because a few people stood against the night to change it. They stood for one another and marched together to end slavery.
Many Americans were against slavery and those that stood for freedom were called Anti-American. Still they fought for a better America and won. Despite this victory however, the long march continued.
From the end of slavery came segregation. A time where everyday people like you and me were treated like animals and precluded from businesses, washrooms, restaurants and towns. Those that stood against this evil were also called Anti-American. They stood, they marched, protested and won. Despite this, the long march continued.
From the fall of segregation, racism reared its ugly head once more. Hate dripping from peoples hearts as they belittled, beat and bullied people into submission. Lives ended, futures topped and families decimated by other peoples hate.
Generations upon generations destroyed all due to the color of a person's skin. Standing against racism was once called Anti-American but good people rose to combat this evil and things got better.
Even today racism still exists and its up to each of us to build a better world for everyone. To be judged by the content of your chataracter and not by the color of your skin.
Long ago women also faced toil and turmoil as they too sought equal status and protections under the law. Women in history couldnt own property, a job, vote or drive in some areas. Women who stood against this tyranny were also called Anti-American. They stood, marched and protested and a change came. Despite this win in getting the vote, their March was just beginning.
After the suffragette era came sexism where women faced inequality in the workplace. Low pay, no respect and no promotions in their careers. Good people marched and things got better, but still, their long march continues. Even today women of color face the most inequality and its up to each if us to change it.
Then in our history came the rainbow road and my people march. Homosexuality was met with violence and vitriol by society and the police and millions died to fear and ignorance. Homosexual people were treated like second class citizens, unable to marry or wield the rights of being a couple until a few good people sought to change it. Things improved but our march continues.
Recently, the rights of transgender people have come under attack. Their lifestyle, their rights and their potential attacked by people who fear identity because they have yet to understand their own. Despite this hate good people are rising and the march continues.
To me, America is a great country because good people stand against the night to improve it. They fight their own fears, other people hatreds and societies limitations to build a better more perfect union.
True patriotism is not just blindly saluting your flag but actively ensuring your nation is just and fair. To take a long hard look at yourselves and your nation to build it better is tough but necessary for evolution of the self and society.
Over Americas history you have seen people time and time again rise to combat hate and to build upon what came before. The spirit of resistance that took a fledgling colony and turned it into one of the greatest countries in the world. That spirit if resistance, of change, of improving upon your nation to make it fair and just for all is how you become great.
I love and admire you America, keep fighting for change and standing for the rights of the individual. Dont lose that hope of a better tomorrow because it inspires us all. March onwards America towards a more perfect union.
Stay safe, stay sanitized and stay supportive,
John Ames Birch
