These schools were where native children were moved from their homes to these schools against their will. The residential school system program is one of the great shames in Canadian history. Thousands of children died in those schools over their history and many were left scarred by their experiences. They were taken from their parents, prohibited from speaking their own languages and many were abused. This is not what being Canadian means and we owe it to all the children and their families to ensure something like this never happens again. We need to include this in our learning plans to ensure every generation knows of this crime so it's never again repeated. Additionally we need to locate each and every mass grave in this nation. We need to exhume them and ensure they are properly buried with their customs. Finally, we need to then erect statues on each site to honor all the children who died to sickness, disease or abuse. We need to honor those Canadians who never got to grow up. We need to remember them, we need to know their names and etch those names in stone so they are never forgotten. We must honor them so we can again look to our flag with pride not shame. We need to as well honor our indigenous individuals across this nation and ensure that they and their reserves are modernized. We need to ensure clean water, medical and food infrastructure and opportunities for all our indigenous communities. For too long a blind eye has been turned to the suffering of indigenous individuals. It's time to fix these inequalities and honor those that fell in the past by ensuring a better future for all Canadians.
