I think that all guards and prisoners need to have tests done to determine if they are asymptomatic as some many never fall ill but can make others ill. Additionally, I was hearing that some sick prisoners and being put into isolation which might aggravate their mental health during this crisis. Isolating unwell prisoners is to ensure safety of other inmates or staff but the inmates should be given all the requisite needs including, medical, counselling and nutritional. Perhaps instead we can leave the doors open and lock the wing to allow them some freedoms while unwell and to ensure we can always check on their health status. There should be a nurse or doctor on rotation at all times in the isolation ward to ensure peak health for the unwell inmates. They would with the guards help, check on the status of the patients and ensure that if their conditions worsen then immediate action is taken. Guards should also wear PPE at all times to reduce risk of outside contagion. Furthermore, they should change shoes to ensure they don't track in the virus via feet transference. Guards that are asymptomatic should be assigned to the ward with the unwell patients in my opinion unless our medical leaders deem otherwise. Food should be made in sanitary conditions and brought to the inmates to reduce congregation zones. We also need to implement sanitation options with hand washing stations throughout the building to ensure that we can reduce the spread. Finally, if possible we need to have inmates one to a cell and regular cleaning needs to be done of every cell and common area, all buttons and guard posts and stairway handles if applicable. These were just a few thoughts I was having in relation to inmate safety and wanted to share in the hopes of increasing safety in our institutions.
