Hey Everyone, I am writing to you today to discuss the Fukushima nuclear leak that has been seeping into the ocean since the tsunami and earthquake that hit Japan. I was reading that they are seeking to dump nuclear polluted water into the oceans to drain the reservoirs so they can decommission the facility. I was therefore looking into options that will help clean up the spill while preventing any further environmental challenges. As such I was thinking about ways to help clean up the site safely. I therefore think that we should work to contain the contaminated water around the plant. I was therefore thinking about the possibility of creating land around the site to contain leaks from the plant. This would be created by layering sediment like they did with the palm tree islands in Dubai. This would also be dug into the ground to prevent groundwater seepage. From here the water can then be pumped out of the "bowl" and then sequestered safely in radioactive storehouses. We can then plant sunflowers around the site as they have been shown to passively soak up radiation. Furthermore, we should look into other options for cooling the fuel rods and I was wondering about the application of Liquid Nitrogen in emergency situations to keep the fuel rods cool and stable. I am wondering if this has been attempted and if it will help with cooling and containment. We should also research new ways to prevent fuel leaks by creating a shell that is resistant to heat and does not transfer said heat beyond the "Shell". This can then be used to contain any fallout if it were to occur. Finally, I am wondering if we can look into better fuel rods that are coated to prevent leaks or overheating. Similar to a heat shield that we use on the space shuttles, if we can look into adding this material to the rods or the building it might help with meltdowns.
