Hey everyone, I was reading a story that talked about how BC's emergency system was overwhelmed during this heatwave. The story talked about paramedic shortages and delays in hospitals. This year stands as testament to how underfunded and underprepared we are for emergency situations. This pandemic and then the heatwave have displayed the cracks in the foundations of our medical institutions and we must make repairs. I propose that we amend our firefighting training to include emergency medical treatment to allow our firefighters to act as paramedics in times of catastrophe. We can renovate fire halls to include a clinic and to house paramedic supplies. This will help alleviate manpower needs during a disaster and improve patient care and wait times. Furthermore, the story talked about how paramedics wait with the patient in the hospital until a bed opens which delays their turnaround. As such I propose that we hire nurses to act as intake and triage experts. The paramedics bring in their patient who is then assigned a nurse. That nurse takes over their care and starts the basic tests and paperwork the doctors will need. Then the paramedics can leave to help other injured citizens. Additionally, we need to take a long hard look at our hospital system and ensure more funding and manpower that can be activated during a crisis. Perhaps we have institute a policy similar to the national guard reserves. We train citizens in emr certifications and they are placed on a reserve system to be activated in times of pandemic or catastrophe. If we can review these options to determine their application potential it would be greatly appreciated. Stay safe, stay sanitized and stay supportive, John Ames Birch @johneames2
