IN REMEMBERANCE

OIP.jpg

Each year Hundreds of trans people die due to another's hate. Years ago many people rose to combat hate and discrimination. They marched, lobbied, litigated and challenged our society to be fair and just for all.

Today, the current target of hate appears to be Trans individuals who only wish to live good lives and care for those they love. They want to love, live, work, build, dream, vote and enjoy the same liberties that our nation was founded upon.

Fear is what plagues our current society and that fear causes good people to act out in vitriol and violence. Words used as weapons to tear us away from each other as we struggle still to understand the individual verse the collective.

We must remember them, their lives and their names so that history never forgets the courage they had to stand in the face of adversity and atrocity and shout "this is me!".

― Ellen Wittlinger, Parrotfish

“People changed lots of other personal things all the time. They dyed their hair and dieted themselves to near death. They took steroids to build muscles and got breast implants and nose jobs so they'd resemble their favorite movie stars. They changed names and majors and jobs and husbands and wives. They changed religions and political parties. They moved across the country or the world — even changed nationalities. Why was gender the one sacred thing we weren’t supposed to change? Who made that rule?”

Ban Ki-Moon

“To those who are gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgender -- let me say -- you are not alone. Your struggle, for the end to violence and discrimination, is a shared struggle. Today, I stand with you. And I call upon all countries and people, to stand with you too.

A historic shift is underway. We must tackle the violence, decriminalize consensual same sex relationships and end discrimination. We must educate the public. I call on this council and people of conscience to make this happen.
“Rejecting your gay or transgender child won't make them straight. It will only mean you will lose them.”

― Alok Vaid-Menon, Beyond the Gender Binary

“The truth is, that we are in a state of emergency. In the past few years, we have seen an onslaught of legislation... targeting gender non-conforming people...

Our communities are under attack. Regardless of whether these pieces of legislation pass, the fact that they're even being considered suggests just how disposable we are considered to be.”

― Alison Goodman, Eon: Dragoneye Reborn

“I found power in accepting the truth of who I am. It may not be a truth that others can accept, but I cannot live any other way. How would it be to live a lie every minute of your life?”
“Deep deep down inside of me I know I am not a mistake. I do not feel sick. I do not feel like a pervert. I am not gay. I am not a fag. I am not a drag queen. I am not a transexual. I am not transgender. I am just her, a daughter, a sister, someone's girlfriend, just like all the other pretty girls on campus.”
