Recently there was a report about a man who threw a brick through a car window a few blocks from the white house. The man allegedly also uttered a threat to the Asian ladies and made them afraid for their lives. Even one incident of hate is too many, these incidents appear to be escalating during the course of the Pandemic and in turn has made a hostile environment for Asian peoples. All over the world people of Asian descent face unequal landscapes and bias related incidents as they strive for excellence in our society. The contributions of Asian peoples in the Americas are legendary. Without the contributions of Asian peoples in the Americas we would not have had breakthroughs in Atomic Science, farm workers rights, the USB as well as Youtube. Many times during our history, despite their contributions, people of Asian descent are often overlooked for recognition and recompense. They are often overlooked while their white counterparts are immortalized for their work, this is a travesty. Most arguably, the greatest achievement of Asian peoples in the Americas was birthed from an atrocity. During World War II, Japanese Americans were rounded up and sent to internment camps while their property and businesses were given away to Caucasian peoples. They fought and marched for their rights and the rights of other persecuted groups to further the goal of Human Rights. Working with other marginalized groups, Asian peoples helped cement the Civil Liberties Act as a cornerstone of our modern day society. Without the contributions of Asian peoples in the Americas we would be living in a different society and possibly saluting a different flag. It is in these moments where we band together that we define our society and collective world. These moments where we shine like diamonds in the night help to light the path out of darkness and back into the dawning of a new day. We are not so different from one another, each of us striving for excellence in our daily life from school to work, cooking to crafting, politics to perseverance we each contribute to the tapestry of the collective Peoplekind. We are all people, we live, work, play, dream and create new opportunities for ourselves and one another each time we recognize our shared struggle and act to mitigate it. It matters not our color, creed, religion, orientation, gender, birthplace or identity we all share a beating heart. This rhythm, this tempo in time connects us all together from ancestry to evolution as we work and build the collective future we all dream of. We are mothers, fathers, sons, daughters, sisters, brothers, cousins and friends and together we make up the collective expression of our nations, birthplaces and futures. We cannot lose sight of all the shared characteristics of who we are together so that we may understand ourselves by looking at the collective and understand the collective by looking at ourselves. We must remember the people behind the prejudice and recognize that we are not so different from one another. This shared legacy of struggle, this hope for the future and this willingness to build propels each of us to greater heights so that we might uplift the masses to a new understanding of who we are individually and collectively. In the days, months and years to come I humbly ask that we try to understand one another before we try to define one another. This understanding will bridge the divides between us and another to ensure that we finally understand the value of we.
