Subject: Sovereignty of Self (Opinion)
The person, an individual conjoined to the infinite possibility that is us. Within each of us lies a soul, a conscious being of the infinite creation, alive and free.
That person from their birth has the fundamental freedom innate to us all, the freedom to choose. That choice is not beholden to the whims of others but to your directed will. A voice calling out into the unknown, a spark to light the flame anew.
When this voice, this person, is bound unlawfully or immorally in chains all of our society is diminished. Throughout our history, we have fought each other, fought for one another. We have stood and we have marched, risen and fallen and then stood once more. All to answer the same question “what is the value of life?”.
Within each of us lies a spark of the infinite, a connection from us to who we really are. This connection to one another, this bond forged by starlight and entangled by love, makes us all priceless.
You cannot own another person!. You cannot own their minds, bodies or souls. You must earn them. You must earn them through kindness, compassion and dialogue.
The current state of our world is a reminder that we have forgotten this lesson.
All over the world men, women and children lie unlawfully in chains. Some for currency, some for condemnation and some for coitus.
The sovereignty of the person is paramount.
Without the rights and freedoms of the individual, the collective is also bound. It is bound with the same irons we use to shackle each other out of fear or fragility.
Slavery of any kind is illegal, immoral, insidious and inhumane and we are all diminished for it. Over our history we have struggled with our inner demons to understand the individual and the collective. Hundreds of years and thousands of atrocities and yet even today some lie unlawfully in chains.
We as a civilized and progressive society cannot allow other members of that society to live in servitude. Across the globe, men, women and children are bought and sold into sexual slavery, this will always be wrong.
We cannot allow innocence to be bought and sold by evil men and women. We cannot allow coin to eclipse conscience or else we cease to be human.
The human race is better than chains or conscription. We are more than property or flesh, we are alive and we all deserve freedom. We cannot allow corruption to enchain our humanity and the morality of the human spirit.
Each and every being deserves sovereignty of the person. The freedom to choose who we are, what we do, whom we love and what is done to our bodies.
When the rights of one of us are threatened unjustly, all of our rights are endangered.
We must stand for one another and we must break any chain that is unlawful or inhumane.
This is a choice put to us all, who we will be in the face of such evil and inhumanity?. Will we stand by and do nothing? Or will we rise and stand against this tide of inhumanity and push back against that dark night. “Do not go gently into that good night...rage, rage against the dying of the light” - Dylan Thomas
