Hey Everyone,
I am writing to you about the ineffectual and illegal vaccine passport system and its fervent use across the globe. To begin, I believe in vaccines and understand that they will help see us through this crisis.
That being said, this wave of discrimination in the guise of public safety is undermining the very spirit of the foundation of the western world. We are a democracy, a nation of choice, a legion of voices shouting together towards a common future.
Today we are falling back into old atrocities as we once again segregate people into groups with different rights. Years ago there was segregation in the western world, a time where individuals were treated like property instead of people. They were not allowed to use certain restaurants, washrooms, had to pay more for services, lost jobs and even died due to this system. As we know a great nation marched hand in hand to see liberty and justice reign.
These atrocities were not limited to the western world as our history has shown. Nearly a century ago, a dark shadow rose across Europe. The Nazis rose to power and destroyed anyone they felt as inferior. This was the time of the Jewish Genocide and the Holocaust. A time where Jewish and homosexual people faced tyranny and oppression. They were made to identify themselves by having to wear the Star of David if you were Jewish and a pink triangle if you were LGBTQ+. They were prevented from holding public office or civil service positions. They were denied jobs in radio and the press and were even prevented from farming. They had their businesses taken away from them and had to face daily humiliation. They were assigned to cramped "Ghettos" and had their property taken from them by the Nazis. After this they were then taken to camps where they were beaten, raped, experimented on and then killed in gas chambers.
These horrible tragedies seem to be repeating themselves as hate and discrimination reigns down on unvaccinated people. There is talk of having unvaccinated people pay more for goods and services, they are losing jobs, businesses, being prevented from establishments and having their freedom of mobility infringed upon all due to their vaccination status.
I am therefore worried that the hate I am seeing from everyday people harkens back to the time of genocide. It starts small, hate builds upon itself until it becomes a raging inferno that destroys everything in its path. Hate leads to atrocity as good people fall victim to bias and fear.
Long have we struggled as a people when it comes to collective good and individual rights. However, without the rights of the individual the collective is meaningless. We must find a balance between collective good and individual rights as the individual makes up the collective whole and as such each right is important to all of us.
The governments have instituted this system as they claim it protects the public good. However, given that the delta variant is spreading amongst vaccinated and unvaccinated people alike, this system is inherently flawed. The vaccine only protects the person from serious illness or death and as such, they can still get sick and pass the virus to others. Therefore, the wave of cases we are now seeing is coming from vaccinated people who are not wearing their masks.
As such, given that this system does not protect us and only attacks our morality, it's therefore immoral. The only way a government can infringe on human rights is in the best interests of the public good. However, given that this system is not in the interests of public good, this system violates the Bill of Rights and the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. All this system does is cater to people's fears and makes unvaccinated people the target of those fears.
The only way we are going to resolve this situation is by vaccines and mask usage. We know that masks help stop the spread of the virus because in each area that removed the mask mandates, we saw a jump in cases. As such we need to immediately remove this system of segregation before it turns once again into atrocity.
I am therefore calling on the media and governments to rectify the misinformation and reinstate mask use regardless of vaccination status and to remove this system that only violates human rights and human dignity. The time is now to stand together, we are on the precipice and if we continue this trend of segregation and discrimination, we will create a new reich.
Hope will always be stronger than fear.
"I swore never to be silent whenever and wherever human beings endure suffering and humiliation. We must always take sides. Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim. Silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented. Sometimes we must interfere. When human lives are endangered, when human dignity is in jeopardy, national borders and sensitivities become irrelevant. Whenever men or women are persecuted because of their race, religion or political views, that place must - at that moment - become the centre of the universe". - Elie Weisel
