Hey Everyone, I have read stories that the idea of police reform has stalled due to many ideas on how to reform the police. However, this issue is important not only to the future of Americans but everyone who suffers under a corrupt and inexperienced police force. Each year people suffer and die at the hands of those we have chosen to protect us. For years they have highlighted this "War on crime" and how the police were essentially treating the populace as combatants. Police use tactics like torture and deception in order to make people comply. Many of these incidents are moments of racial bias or discrimination and with each act of evil the foundation of our justice system crumbles. Police have to be held to the highest standards and must be trained adequately or else we are setting our future up for failure. We must remove systemic racism from our society and this starts with our judicial system. If we do not challenge this corruption here and now, it will spread. All over the world we are seeing instances of police brutality, racial profiling and crimes from our protectors. They cover for one another out of some misguided idea that they are protecting the "good guys". However, with each concession, each act of violence or brutality they undermine the very profession they claim to serve. As such it's time to reform the police academies to include the following: 1. Emergency Medical Responder Certifications - To provide trauma care immediately if force is applied and to stabilize patients on scene. They would be provided a medical bag and have the training to help the patient until medics arrive. 2. Psychological certification - Each officer will be skilled in mental health and be able to assist people in shock when they arrive on scene. 3. How to safely subdue - Each officer would be required to take this course that will show them deescalation techniques as well as medically safe subduing techniques to better respond to confrontations. 4. Racial Equality - This course would be designed to negate racial profiling by training the officer to spot racial bias through reports and daily interactions. This will also allow them to understand their own bias and how to resolve it before it impedes the pursuit of true justice. 5. Alternate Deferral Programs - This would embolden the officer to make amendments to situations if it's in the best interests of society and justice. This will train them on how and when to apply deferred justice for non violent offenders. This would add programs like community service, restitution and outreach options so that non violent offenders can be rehabilitated without incarceration. 6. The History of Human Rights - This course would train them on human rights laws and abuses through history and the actions taken by activists to make our world better. This would allow them to know the laws inside and out and work on solutions to uphold human rights as they serve their communities. 7. Community outreach - This would be subjective to the city or nation of training but would focus on ways that the police can support the community without disturbing the community. This will also give the officers training on how to provide suggestions to improve laws that are racist or prejudicial and give them paths to proactive justice. This course would also train them on how to support their communities through potlucks, fundraisers as well as direct charity options. These are a few of the courses that we will need to craft a better generation of officers, ones that will help instead of hinder and heal instead of hurt. For our society to be just and fair we need our officers to be just and fair. It's time to end this war between the police and the populace and mend the broken hearts of People of Color. Together, we stand on the precipice of justice. Our actions or inactions will ultimately determine if our society falls into chaos or is uplifted to equality. I know that the good hearts around the globe will rise to reform the police. Stay Safe, Stay Sanitized and Stay Supportive, John Ames Birch @johneames2
